    As we head into winter break and the half-way point of the school year, it is a great time to reflect on what we have accomplished and what we have to focus on during the remaining school year. I am proud to report that the Hudson School District recently received a “significantly exceeds expectations” on the WI Department of Public Instruction (DPI) annual School Report Card. This is the first time the School District has scored at this level. In particular, we are proud of our “closing gaps” progress. Our Winter 2019-2020 newsletter provides specific details about our School Report Card results and some highlights of hands-on activities that contribute to our students learning at high levels.

    Looking ahead to 2020, the Board of Education has started several initiatives that will include community feedback. First, the Board has directed the administration to establish a Community Advisory Committee to research school start times and make a recommendation on whether Hudson should consider changing the secondary school start time. Currently, our students in grades 6-12 start their school day before 7:45 AM. The advisory committee will review research; look at impacts on school operations, families, activities, and more. Following the research phase, the advisory committee will make a recommendation to the Board in the fall of 2020. The Board will review the recommendation and take action, if they decide to change start times, in the winter of 2021. 

    The Board of Education has spent the last several months establishing a long-term maintenance plan for our eight school buildings and administrative office. Long-term maintenance may include items like roofing, HVAC, and flooring. The Board will engage staff, parents, and community members to help develop maintenance priorities and plans for covering the cost of these needs. 

    The Hudson School District leadership team is focused on continuous improvement efforts that will help drive our District’s strategic planning and culture of academic excellence. We look forward to sharing this work with our families and the community later this school year.
